Quick Take

  • BlackRock digital assets head Robbie Mitchnick said bitcoin’s risk-off characteristics have returned to the forefront as investors focus on debt, deficits, and currency debasement.
  • Renewed spot ETF inflows and bitcoin’s declining correlation with equities are also constructive signs, according to analysts, though macro uncertainty remains a near-term hurdle.

Bitcoin's recent rally toward $80,000 has reinforced its case as a portfolio diversifier rather than simply another risk asset, according to BlackRock Head of Digital Assets Robbie Mitchnick.

Speaking to CNBC on Wednesday, Mitchnick said bitcoin has characteristics that can make it behave like a risk-on asset, including its novelty and volatility, while speculative and leveraged trading can reinforce that relationship. However, he argued that bitcoin's fundamental risk and return drivers can point in the opposite direction to equities and other traditional assets.

"Certainly in the last couple of weeks, the [risk-off] narrative has risen back to the forefront," he said. "I think in the long run, that's the narrative to bet on around bitcoin." Mitchnick added that this is how most long-term institutional investors BlackRock engages with view the asset.

That fits with BlackRock's broader view of bitcoin as a portfolio diversifier. Mitchnick described it as a "global scarce decentralized emerging monetary alternative," pointing to the recent pressure on equities and choppy fixed income markets while bitcoin and gold rallied as consistent with that thesis.

The comments follow bitcoin's sharp rebound from the low $60,000s to briefly above $81,000 earlier this week. Mitchnick said global debt and deficit levels are a major concern for investors, and those concerns are not going away. "Anytime that re-enters the headlines, it tends to be to the benefit of assets like bitcoin and gold, and that's certainly been the case the last couple weeks," he said. Investors worried about fiscal conditions are drawn to bitcoin as a store of value, he added, particularly among younger demographics whose parents' generation may have favored gold for the same purpose.

ETF demand returns as bitcoin tests resistance

Other market observers also see signs that bitcoin's latest rally has a firmer foundation. Kraken Chief Economist Thomas Perfumo noted there have been approximately $2.4 billion in net inflows into spot bitcoin ETFs in August, making it their strongest month of 2026 and erasing almost half of their year-to-date deficit. With Strategy sidelined as a buyer since May and combined 30-day demand from the company and ETFs still below levels seen during the previous bull market, Perfumo said there could be further upside if Strategy returns to the market. Still, he cautioned that price discovery and the "mania phase" typically associated with a bull market are likely some distance away, with uncertainty around monetary policy, the Clarity Act, and the U.S.-Iran conflict among potential headwinds.

Mitchnick, however, argued that the Clarity Act is less critical for bitcoin than for the broader crypto market, saying the asset already has much of the regulatory acceptance and clarity it needs. More hinges on the legislation for areas such as DeFi, he said. Mitchnick added that market participants generally see further regulatory clarity as potential upside rather than something they are "banking on" or incorporating into their base case.

Bitcoin's immediate test remains around the $80,000 to $83,000 region. LMAX Group Market Strategist Joel Kruger said the cryptocurrency is consolidating, allowing overbought readings to cool off, and the May high just below $83,000 represents the next major resistance level. He also noted renewed institutional demand and spot bitcoin and ether ETF inflows, while arguing that further U.S. dollar weakness could provide additional support as attention now turns to Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's Jackson Hole remarks on Friday.

Wintermute OTC Trader Jasper De Maere similarly identified $80,000 to $81,000 as the band to watch after bitcoin was rejected from $81,200, with the mid-$70,000s the first significant zone of support should the market move lower. De Maere said bitcoin's correlation with the Nasdaq has fallen to around 0.3, near multi-year lows after peaking near 0.9, with the cryptocurrency trading more like gold through August as the "debasement trade" gathers pace.

21Shares co-founder Ophelia Snyder said bitcoin's rally was more directly related to developments in the bond market, arguing that its consolidation beyond an initial short squeeze suggests the move is more than just forced buying. The Treasury's Aug. 19 intervention to support pricing at the long end of the curve, alongside equity weakness and shifts in yields, highlights growing demand to de-risk U.S. exposure, she added.

Snyder argued that the relationship between bitcoin and bond markets is ultimately about "sound money," and expects it to intensify as bitcoin moves further into position as a monetary asset and monetary-policy hedge.
